March 3, 2005: Random ramblin's

The sea was green and choppy today like my stomach after breakfast at IHOP. This was my day back and first ride since returning from Topeka, and I was bummed because I missed the Maverick's Big Surf contest by one day. It would have been really cool to ride my bike out to the Fitz and watch it from there. (By the way, ESPN will be airing a telecast of this event on April 24.)

I was doing a half-assed backside EG when I saw a CHP officer on a dual-purpose motorcycle heading up to the Crack. I dumped down a couple of gears and headed up the hill after him. He saw me coming and stopped, dismounted, and turned off the engine. I had never seen a dual-purpose CHP bike before and I just wanted to check it out, but I think I actually ended up "busting" the guy. I initiated the conversation by asking him if he was looking for somebody and he stammered something about looking for recent tracks of motocross scofflaws trespassing in the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) land. He then went to as much as admit that he actually never really went after motorcycles in the POST land, he just liked the riding the trails himself. At least he was honest about it.

(See photo) It's a cruel world when you either a) can't take your crutches with you wherever you're going; or b) you have to lock them up to keep them from getting stolen.

Riding along in McNee State Park, I had to dodge a huge, fat, furry bumblebee flying head-level to me on a perpendicular intercept vector. Reminded me of playing an old-school 3D video game like Zaxxon.

Ok people, I can understand the need to use TP out of doors, but why are some people incapable of burying it or otherwise covering their tainted refuse. Who just takes a crap, wipes, and drops the soiled TP right on the ground?

I was somewhat worried that I might have lost ground during the Topeka layoff, but today's ride reassured me a bit. I have to keep reminding myself that it's as much about mind set as it is about fitness, and I believe I have the mind set to keep powering those cranks without letting the pain or other distractions get to me.

After the backside EG, I headed down to La Mirada then took another swipe at the backside EG before heading over to Princeton and the Fitz. It started raining at mile 9.0 out by Pillar Point and didn't stop for the rest of the ride. What else is new. By the time I got out to Gray Whale Trail, it was a sloppy, gloppy, muddy, squishy mess -- kind of like Krusty's shorts after breakfast at IHOP.
