March
22, 2005: Rain, duct tape, and diapers |
||||||
Today's ride started off in a little sprinkling pitter-patter and ended in a drenching downpour. It rained heavily all day today, but later in the afternoon, it seemed to clear out a little bit . Eager to stick to the training schedule, I decided to take my chances. Didn't work out.
I basically did a Gran Prix road ride on the Hoo-E up to McNee and then all the way back down to the Seymour Bridge in HMB, then meandering through HMB on both sides of the Cabrillo, in the pouring rain by this time, and back up the coastal bikepath to EG. Because of the rain, I pushed hard and only stopped twice. My duct-taped plastic shell is still doing an adequate job keeping me somewhat dry, but it is literally held together with duct tape. It's only a matter of time before that shell just disintegrates into dust with age and wear. Speaking of age and wear, today I got my new Camelback Mule hydration system. Now this is what I'm talking about. It has a bazillion pockets and storage areas, as well as a giant 100 OZ bladder. There is no comparison between this and that ridiculous Monsoon Tsunami (See March 17, 2005: Grinding it out). Rules to live by: 1) You get what you pay for You know, I've railed on this before, but why can't people dispose of their own shit when they're out in the world? Worse, why do they have to bring shit out of their homes and into the world? I was riding back through Princeton in the little open space across from the Old Princeton Landing and there on the trail was a big garbage bag, open, filled to the brim with spent diapers. The diapers were rolled and taped down and stacked like so many super burritos in a veritable infant log pile of waste. Where had all these used diapers come from and why had they just been dumped right here? Who are these fucking people?!?
